Rolling stone magazine contents page.

L_The Rolling Stone contents page uses one main image ,and a smaller image shadowing the larger one to the left ,ensuring all attention goes to the larger black and white long shot of the two men dancing .It has a caption in the corner of the image, but also underneath has a main headline and information about what the article is about. The text for the main headline saying 'Johnny be good' is in a black bold font ,with the white undertoning therefore making it stand out more ,it is also the same font used on all the larger fonts .In the top left corner it has the initials of Rolling Stone and underneath that a sell line which is 'all the news that fits'. The contents is then listed underneath ,pushed to the left of the page ,making more room for the page to hold a larger image like the one above .At the bottom right is some information of the magazine. The main colours used are purple, black and white, which are probably the colours used within this issue.
I _The institution of the magazine is Wenner Media.
I_After the front cover ,the contents page is just as important as it is the first page seen after the cover and directs the reader to other pages in the magazine,so it needs to be interesting ,set out on the page well and informative .Rolling Stone magazines content page is organised well and is clear to understand .From the contents page above it does give the idea that this magazine does represent music from past and present ,hence the black and white image of the two old men dancing then the colour image of the younger artist Beyonce .
A_The audience for this contents would be of both genders because two images are used showing both sexes ,there is a larger image of the two men dancing ,and the smaller colour image of Beyonce ,but overall both genders are catered for ,looking at the text in the content this shows this too.
R_This particular contents page represents both the modern and old side of music ,ironic as the magazine has been around for some time so has a good knowledge of both.It represents music in a positive manner ,

Rolling Stone magazine front cover

L _The front cover is mostly dedicated to a close up image of Amy Whinehouse against a white background ,her black get up ,make up and hair make the image seem more dramatic .The masthead like the Amy Whinehouse headline are both in baby blue and the masthead is partly covered by the image ,a convention usually used but the magazine is still recognisable to the audience .The image of Amy ,is a rare one as she looks innocent and is sporting her trademark grunge look but looks healthy instead of drugged up.Using blue on Amy Winehouse's name is meant to relate to calmness and happiness and blue is the colour of the ocean and sky where both relate to this. There is an issue number and date line at the top right of the page .The main and other cover lines are down the left hand side of the page next to the image on the right. The other cover lines are done in smaller writing and use the same font as the main.'The Diva and her Demons' is written in red to represent that Amy can be hot headed ,and red is related to evil which could be her demons .The main colours used are red ,white ,blue and black.
I _The Rolling Stone magazine is published every fortnight and is produced by Wenner Media.
I_The front cover of the magazine gives the audience the idea that each week it represents alternative music ,with different artists from different genres each fortnight ,so therefore it caters for a larger audience ,the blue and the image of Amy seem like they are trying to make Amy apear angelic and show the audience she has come out stronger and has now calmed down but hasn't lost her trademark image .
A_This issue is aimed at both genders but more of a female audience ,as they will see her as a strong role model as she has got back up from her problems which many females will feel they can relate too.The age range it will appeal to will be mainly 16-24, however, as the magazine also writes about politics, it will appeal to older age groups also.
R_Rolling Stone magazine represents music in a stereotypical way ,it represents music in a positive way.

Q Magazine contents page

L_The contents page has continued to use the same colours to contrast with the rest of the magazine ,using black ,red ,white and grey .It has a banner headline across the top of the page with the Q  logo ,contents and date .The main image is Cheryl Cole when she made a popular return to music as a solo artist ,she is the main focus of the image ,without a caption .Given that Cheryl is wearing black shows dominance in the industry now she is a solo artist ,and the fact her marriage breakdown was in the public eye wearing black can be to show she is a strong female and can handle the break up.
I _The institution of the contents page is Bauer Media group.
I _The contents page is made to organise the magazines features and contents so that it is made easy for the reader to go straight to the page they want. This contents page does this well as it is very well presented and organised. It uses the one main blown up image and the two medium sized images ,ordered to the left to let the image of Cheryl seem more dominant over the page therefore attracting more of the readers focus to that image ,they will then look for the article about Cheryl in the content .

A _The audience this contents page would appeal to would be a young, male audience, as the colours used are quite dull apart from the red and the image of Cheryl Cole will apeal more to a male audience as she is a pin up that most men are attracted too ,saying that though this magazine issue will attract females aswell but in less of them.
R _Q's content page represents Indie music from the image and the over all look of the page. It also represents a young style and in a positive way ,Cheryls story is that she came from a poor background so she influences young people to try hard and not give up on their dreams because they too can make it .

Q double page spread

L _The double page spread is quite unconventional of a typical issue in the way that rather focusing on the one artist for the image ,the image is a long shot of todays various artists .Continuing the same use of colours from the front cover onto the double page spread and some of the various artists carry on the colours in their outfits .Red is a popular choice of colour over the double page spread which is a connotation as red is usually seen as 'HOT' and that is what todays artists are seen as to the reader. The image used across the spread is a wide shot taken to ensure all artists are seen in the shot .
I _The double page spread is produced by the Bauer media group.
I _The idea of this issue's double page spread in particular is to interest the reader ,a typical issue is usually dedicated to the one artist per double page spread ,this one is a special edition therefore apealing more to the reader ,it is said to be featuring all top artists of the current century as voted for by you the audience .What else will grab the readers attention is the fact all of the artists are dressed individually ,with the females dressed more outrageously than the males so this is to show the dominance between both genders ,females have a larger role in the music industry therefore feeling they need to proove themselves more perhaps by being more eccentric .However another reason for this is to attract a wider audience such as males .
A _The over all article is to countdown the hottest people in music at the moment, which means it attracts most music lovers. It will attract the same age group as the front cover would as it in the same genre of music.
R _The representation is that all music genres have come together for this one issue ,and in the music industry. However, the way that the artists are positioned with thier backs to each other shows relevance of competition, and showing that they are all competing to become the best in the music industry.

Q front cover

Florence Welch Q Magazine May 2010 Cover Photo - United Kingdom

L _Use of black ,red ,grey and white is obvious of this Q issue ,the masthead is rather large centering the readers attention to the top left of the magazine therefore being able to see Florence aswell ,the main image of her is a long shot ,conveniantly centred to catch the readers attention .The caption to the left of Florence reads 'The 100 greatest front men starring the best new frontwoman' this being Florence. Its ironic that the first bit about the men is in a bolder ,bigger font because its the first thing the reader will see but they will have seen the image of Florence so will be curious as to why she is the cover star for this issue if it is about male frontmen. With a banner headline stating that the issue ensures free music inside the magazine again will capture the readers attention ,and other coverlines around the page link to the main one listing bands featured throughout the magazine .With also a bar code at the bottom of right of the page with the price of 3.99 printed clearly overhead.

I _Q magazine is produced by the Bauer media group and is published monthly.
I _Florence and The Machine are alternative Indie ,showing this issue is directed more toward this genre ,Florence is therefore made to look like a powerful female ,her flame hair contrasts nicely with the use of red and black throughout the front cover ,This issue is dedicated strictly to music as other issues can sometimes focus on not only music ,but sport ,comedy ,films and politics also.

A _I think the main audience for this issue is youung teenagers upto young adults ,i also think it targets more of a female audience over the male audience because of the use of Florence as the cover star.

R _The representation of Florence is that she is a typical female music role model ,she is young ,powerful and has the ability to influence todays music this is shown in her stance and pose ,it shows shes in charge and doesn't mess about .

Contents Page .

L _ The colour scheme again has continued ,through onto the contents page ,again colour use of red, black ,white and yellow is obvious and continuinity of these colours is used throughout the issue .A main font is used for the main headlines ,sub-headlines and headlines ,with side articles of the magazines centred to the right with their page numbers making it easier for the reader .Again there is a main headline which stands out ,the font big and the white underlining the black text .With only two images used both long shots ,linking too the main article .Split up into two sides with articles on one side and the band index on the other.

I _The magazine is produced by IPC media.
I _The ideology of the contents page like the front cover is to attract the readers attention it is one of the first pages the reader will see first ,so it has to be avle to capture their attention thus by using bold fonts ,dark texts and bright colours.

A _The audience of this contents page would be males ,from young teenagers up to young adults ,the colour use isn't to bright aside from the red used and the main image is that of Oasis usually targeting more of the male audience.

R _Nme's contents page from the all over look does represent the conventions of a Indie mag ,from the colours used down to the images .It represents a young style in a positive manner showing music can be an influence to anyone ,and is there for everyone.

Double Page Spread/Research

L _The double page spread is a long shot of Florence ,the other half the article is coverage belonging to the image therefore text talking about Florence & The Machine .The title is in the background layer ,making the picture in the foreground layer stand out .The black and white background contrasts with the colour of the flag and her hair (Florences hair is her trademark red )which makes the audience focus their attention on her .The colours used in the double page spread are some of the colours originally used on the front cover of this NME issue ,black and red the grey is brought in too therefore allow these colours to stand out even more.

_The double page spread is produced by IPC Media .
I _The ideology of the image is to capture the readers attention ,being that the image is a long shot this allows all of the body to be captured ,Florence is posed in a suggestive manner of power she knows where she stands in the music industry and so do her fans .The red used in the image symbolises passion and love for the music she creates and also links with the headline USA ,red is a colour in the American flag.

A _This ussue in particular will be aimed at Florence & The Machine fans but also to those who are interested in this genre of music as magazines like NME are a good way of advertising bands to bring in more fans and advertisement of them .Obviously the audience who the front cover was aimed at will be the same as the double page spread audience.

R_The double page spread again represents Florence in a conventional way for an Indie/Pop band .The colour red is used alot a typical colour used around these types of magazines like NME .Her look is stern to show she is an independent female artist in the music industry ,therefore representing the music genre in a good way as its what the fans want to see.

Research.

The Front Cover

L _This edition of NME magazine uses all typical conventions of a music magazine .The masthead is big ,not centred but pushed to the left ,this works as it is in the readers eyeline with the image .The main picture a medium close up of Florence ,with the main headline overlapping. The headline stating the name of the band overlaps the image of Florence and is written in red with the white outline this could be to emphasise the red ,the colour of passion and love (the colour is usually linked to strong women )and could easily link to Florence's fiery red hair .The smaller cover lines are pushed to the left and bottom of the image ,and are written in smaller font ,drawing more attention to the cover line written in the bigger ,brighter fonts. The magazine has a barcode and price of £2.30 ,with the use of main colours throughout the front page ,black ,yellow ,red and white these colours will carry on threw the article .

I _The NME magazine is published by the IPC media and is produced weekly.
I _NME Ideology ; to publish all the latest in contemporary music, give live reviews and the latest releases.

A _The audience is both male and female ,fom young teenagers up to young adults .
R _The magazine represents Florence in a conventional way for an Indie/Pop band .The look is effortless yet out there ,the red lipstick on Florence works with the colour around the main image .

LIIAR Analysis of the brief.

Language _ Masthead ,main cover line, cover lines ,banner ,headline, logo ,strapline ,the main cover image (full shot,a medium close up ,and or close-up) issue number ,barcode thus having this t must have a price ,dateline ,tagline .My magazine will have continous key elements ,I will use conventions from a typical Indie magazine like continous colour schemes .
Instituton _ IPC Media produces over 60 brands ,selling over 350 milllion copies each year.Only producing the one music magazine though ,this being NME.There are other major media brands ,for instance Bauer media and Code Nast ,choosing Conde Nast would hold no relevance being that it produces fashion magazines so i am choosing bauer magazine to produce my music magazine .They are the producers of major music magazines such as Q magazine and the daddy of music magazines Kerrang.Whilst also having radio and tv channels under their belt ,showing they cover all part of the music genre indicating there place in the music industry.
Ideology _The ideology of my magazine is that this group of people have there own magazine to relate to ,just because your a teenager doesn't mean you have to be stereotyped into liking chart music and Indie can be popular too hence having its own genre of magazine there for people to buy .
Audience _ My music magazine audience will be a range from young teenagers up to young adults ,both genders icluded .
Representation _My magazine will represent the one genre Indie ,so will not be breaking any stereotypical conventions of Indie music magazines ,so am hoping the magazine comes across in a positive way.

Genre.

I have decided to do Indie for my music genre .Doing one genre will only require me to use these few key elements:
Indie Music is more likely to be represented in a band ,including the one singer ,drummer ,bassist and guitarist. The look and image is usually a relaxed ,laybacked ,messy aproach to their apearance ,the key is to look effortless little effort needs to be put in to work the look. Its all about apearance ,looking good but in a  way that comes across as if minimal effort has been put in.Indie songs can be broken down to reveal they are about love ,loss and heartbreak but can be written to show direction of a band members life or experience of one of these emotions thus creating a personal account fans can relate too.The emotional power is reflected in the lyrics.
One main feature included in this genre is the obvious use of instruments ,guitar and drum use is more prominent in this type of genre over any other.

New Music Magazine

The main task is to produce an original music magazine ,front cover ,contents page and double page spread included .With at least 4 original images required.
